In the year 2050, 2.5 billion people will live in an urban area. African and Asian cities are particularly re-shaping and naturally, such transformational processes have an effect on (social) sustainability, life quality and the need of finding new ways of organizing life and infrastructure.
Cape Town is a diverse city which is overall transforming – a City in Flux. The city’s mobility infrastructure is based on two major services: public bus lines and informal shared mini taxis. Together, they form a network of over 800 lines throughout Cape Town.
»City in Flux« allows to explore Cape Town's diversity based on the mobility lines. Each of them is defined by the social-economic factors of the diverse areas it leads through. Selected lines are enriched with stories that provide background information about the line’s surroundings.
Public Transport
Several companies run public transport services in Cape Town. This includes buses and metro trains. These lines are displayed in yellow.
Shared Taxis
Nonetheless, the majority of transportation in Cape Town is handled by »Shared Taxis«. These informal vehicles are operated by smaller companies or individuals. Approximatly, 80 percent of the rides in Cape Town are done with these taxis. These lines are displayed in red.
The Census Data
We merged the census data of the 2011 South African census with the routes to map and detect gaps and breakpoints inside the city. You can filter the routes using these stats and find out more by selecting a route.
